St John Ambulance

Putting first aid in everybody’s hands

Modernising a first aid legacy

When did you last see St John Ambulance? Probably at a public event. Looking organised and professional – a proper medical outfit. Which it is.

But it isn’t, as most people assume, a public service or a commercial contractor. It’s a charity. 90% of the people you see in uniform are volunteers.

It does run a commercial arm selling first aid training and supplies, with all profits channelled directly back into training local volunteers. But in a crowded market, St John has struggled to compete. An inflexible visual identity and a long-standing reticence to ask for money has left it feeling rigid and misunderstood.

St John Ambulance needed a modernised brand system that honoured its legacy, boosted fundraising, built commercial strength, and clearly communicated its vital role in saving lives.

Preparation meets action

The strategic ambition was simple: put the power of first aid into everybody’s hands. To bring this to life creatively, we organised the brand around two distinct operational modes – preparation and action.

Preparation is about education and connection. It captures the warmth of bringing everyday people together to build communities and local resilience. Action is for the moment crisis strikes. Creating a sense of urgency and expertise that instils immediate confidence when seconds count.

This two-part framework gave St John Ambulance the strategic flexibility to show up effectively whether running a community training day or responding to an emergency.

A flexible brand for a modern charity

We evolved the visual identity to give St John Ambulance more energy and warmth across all touchpoints. The iconic symbol was repositioned to the left of the logo, creating more of an anchor across layouts. The brand’s primary greens were brightened and paired with a warm supporting palette.

The new graphic system draws directly on the arrows in the logo, turning them into dynamic framing devices and background patterns. Static, posed photography was replaced with real human stories and dramatic first-person perspectives – showing emergencies through the patient’s eyes to remind people that anyone can save a life, and anyone can need their life saved. In this project we explored using AI image generation to set the concept style. This proved an efficient way to give St John Ambulance the guidance they needed for future photoshoots.

When it came to tone of voice, we gave St John Ambulance a clear, engaging and direct way of talking – like everyone’s favourite teacher. We introduced unapologetic messaging asking for public donations, while commercial channels directly connect every purchase back to St John’s purpose. Making it clear that every paid course or product directly funds volunteer training in local communities.

Ready for action

The refreshed identity brings together St John Ambulance’s charitable mission and commercial ambitions. By balancing warm community connection with high-impact emergency authority, St John now stands out with confidence and clarity. Proving that a legacy brand can be remarkably modern without losing any of its history.
